The Alpha channel controls the transparency in an image or video. These effects come with a transparent background, allowing you to easily drag and drop them onto your footage.

• Select your Threshold mode. We generally recommend leaving it on the default Luma mode, but you can also try Chroma for unique results.
• Adjust the Threshold amount to select the visible range that the rays will emit from. Increase it to make sure the darker parts of your footage are not emitting any rays!
• Threshold smoothness will make your light rays sharper or smoother.
• Length controls the overall distance your light rays travel.
• Exposure controls the overall brightness of your light rays.
• Decay is a falloff control for your light rays, increase or decrease depending on the effect you want to achieve.
• You can choose the direction of your light rays for various effects, like holograms or god-rays.
• Pick from a variety of chromatic aberration settings to add unique colors to your light rays.
• We have four different quality modes. While this plugin is extremely fast, you can speed it up by dropping it down to draft. If you need to increase the quality, try high or even extreme!
• In the compositing settings you can change the blend mode from Screen to Add to make your light rays more powerful.
• If you want to add additional effects to your light rays, we suggest changing the View setting from Final Composite to Rays Solo. You can then add a solid composite effect, change it to black and add any blurs, curves, levels or other effects. Make sure to change your Rays Solo layer to a Screen or Add blend mode!

1. The Airhorn 
   I don’t know when this sound effect took off, but it’s here to stay. From exuberant twitch streamers to trending TikToker’s, the airhorn sound effect will continue to annoy us for eternity.
2. The Dun Dun Dun
   First used in the 1970’s for Young Frankenstein, the dramatic sound effect made it’s way into the memesphere in 2007. You may recall the Dramatic Prairie Dog video featuring this sound. Download your own royalty free dun dun dun sound effect from SoundsCrate, the first one is free!
3. Dreamy Sounds
   Magical dreamy sounds are used all over Youtube videos these days. Perfect for flashbacks or flash-forwards! 
4. Vinyl Record Stopping
   I don’t know how this sound effect stuck around, but I’m glad it did. I’m sure half the people who use this sound have never even held a real record before! Great transition for pacing or dead-stopping a video’s momentum in a funny way. 
5. Funny Gong
   It’s clear content creators have taken a lot of inspiration from Looney Toons! The funny gong is the perfect funny sound effect for impacts and hits.
   Runner Up: Frying Pan
   The frying pan often gets used interchangeably with the Funny Gong, so we knew we had to include it here.
6. Burp
   I’d like to say that this is our only man-made gaseous sound effect on this list, but I don’t want to lie to you. Nevertheless, burps have earned their place on this Top 10 funny sound effects post. Maybe it’s all those energy drinks kids are drinking, but the funny burp sound effect is one we hear all too often.
7. Audience Cheering
   Editors can go days without coming face to face with another person. It only makes sense that they fill that void with digital people. Funny audience sound effects, like cheering and laughter, are often a great way to elicit a response from your viewers. Who said the laugh-track was dead?
8. Aggressive Fart
   The numbers don’t lie, though we wish they did. Our fart sound effects are both some of the most searched and downloaded funny sound effects we have. I’m just glad this list is almost over.
9. Digital Typing
   Fake hacking and techno-babble is a great way to rush through more technical portions of your video. No one wants to sit through your file structuring or export settings. Toss on some of the digital typing sound effect and some math overlays and speed up to the good stuff.
10. Video Game Death
    Perhaps the most appropriate way to end this list. The funny sound effect is a universal cue for failure or defeat, with an inert playfulness that suggests the outcome doesn’t really matter.

It’s easy to be fooled, but we didn’t work with an orchestra to make this collection. This incredible album was created by only two composers, SoundsCrate‘s Gerardo Garcia and Isabelle Engman.

These tracks hint at your favorite epic fantasy movies and shows. As you listen, stories and characters will come alive in your mind. The music is exceptionally narrative, without using any lyrics. 

”       These tracks were inspired by series like Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones and The Dark Crystal : Age of Resistance.     “

Gerardo points out “All these works have massive world building stories, and the music had to match those inspirations.” 

Isabelle continues;

“We like epic scores that have themes to cover the smaller intimate aspects of a film or show with unique instrumentation and tonality, but then have the sweeping themes with bigger intervals and lush orchestration to capture the scale of these fantasy and adventure series.”

This album was heavily influenced by composer Howard Shore, peppered with inspiration from  Ramin Djawadi, Daniel Pemberton and James Horner.

If you’re wondering how only two people pulled off these magnificent orchestral sounds, they combined their classical knowledge of music with modern tools. Utilizing the software Logic Pro, Isabelle and Gerardo were able to compose mostly on a computer.  “Next time, it would be great to gather some musicians and record some solo playing!”

The tools of the trade get better every year, and 2022 is no exception. NVIDIA has been making waves with Omniverse, a creator suite with amazing tools for 3D Artists. Mike has been playing with Omniverse Create, a place to simulate, light and render your 3D assets and scenes. The speeds are truly impressive.

Mike loves to sculpt monsters. This massive Kaiju is one of his most ambitious projects ever (just look at those details). The textures alone are a whopping 75 total UDIM textures, 8K resolution… perfect to put any renderer to the test!

We have half a dozen VFX artists working at ProductionCrate, with our education ranging from completely self-taught to entirely curriculum based. For new and prospective VFX artists, there eventually comes a time in your educational journey to choose between taking online classes, or to be entirely self-taught. Our artists are very familiar with this fork in the road, as such we will provide some useful insight to help with your decision.

Benefits of Online Education vs. Self Taught

We encourage all forms of education, and ongoing self-study will be essential throughout your career to stay on top of new tools and techniques as technology evolves. The software will change over time, but fundamental understandings of the craft will be essential throughout your career.

For artists who are just starting out, or have some experience and need to bolster their skills and portfolio to get a job, the self-taught route can be a great option. This may be the route for you if you are highly motivated, disciplined and know where to find reliable information. It’s cheaper, faster, and you can learn at your own pace. For some, this will be enough to get their foot in the door.

Don’t know which VFX field to start in? Watch the behind-the-scenes featurettes of your favorite movies, VFX breakdowns, and any conference presentations on VFX that you can find. There is no better way to pinpoint your focus than observing and exposing yourself to the possibilities. Once you find your focus, you’re ready to get started.

Scouring the internet for relevant, high-quality information can be time consuming and frustrating. It means navigating through a massive sea of tutorials to figure out what you need to learn to get hired. Once you find your VFX niche and begin to teach yourself, there’s limited ability to get professional feedback on your work to know if you’re on the right track, and no one to assist you if you hit a technical hurdle. If you’re asking yourself “Where do I start?” you may excel more in a structured online course instead of the self-taught route.   

It’s important to note that not all online education is the same. Online schools offer varying levels of personalization, support, and interaction with mentors or instructors. Make sure to research testimonials, past-students and any honest feedback you can find before committing. Look at who is teaching the class and what experience they can pull from to help you learn.

We’ve been working closely with CG Spectrum and are impressed with their work. They check the boxes we think are necessary for a worthwhile investment into your education, so we’ll be looking at their model as the gold standard.

We’re still improving our own workflows, and receiving direction from a mentor would have saved us countless hours instead of the “figure it out as you go” approach some of us have taken.

Institutions can be slow to update their curriculum to reflect the techniques, technologies, and demands of the industry; In this regard the self-taught approach may be preferable. Thankfully, CG Spectrum’s curriculum prioritizes up-to-date education, training students on industry-standard software included in the course that may be otherwise inaccessible for most beginners.

Small class sizes (max 4 students, or 1-on-1 private mentorship) allow for the courses to be somewhat customized to the student’s interests or career goals. Traditional education often packs a class with as many students as possible, often at the expense of the specificity and guidance that some students may require in order to succeed.

Find a school that has an active community. Communicating with peers, alumni and mentors who now are working in the industry will keep you inspired and goal focused. • Who can you turn to for support if needed? (Is your mentor/instructor contactable throughout the week? Are Technical Assistants or other support staff available to help?)
• What percentage of graduates get work in the industry?
• Does the school offer career support? (e.g. portfolio/CV reviews, job application help)
• What software will you be learning? (Is it commonly used in the industry?)
• Is software included in the course fees? Are there any additional costs?

• Quixel Megascans library is absolutely massive, and packed full of high-quality 3D content. Their focus is on photogrammetry / scanned assets, so all the content photo-realistic. They recently acquired RD Textures, bringing some of the best scanned 3D Materials to their library. Quixel is free to use with Unreal Engine, they also have free assets to use with any other software

• AmbientCG is a growing library of generative landscapes and photo-scanned content. From the creators of CC0-Textures (now under AmbientCG) this 3D library continues to provide free and reliable content!

• SketchFab is a community driven platform, which means 2 things. First, there is a ton of content. Thousands of amazing assets are available to download for free. The only downside is not all licenses or quality of models are created equal. Make sure you understand the license associated with your model before using in any project.

• Smithsonian 3D Has an open access to a massive library of 3D content available for download. The quality ranges broadly, but the scanned assets are extremely unique. Check the usage conditions for each model, as they do vary.

• TurboSquid is another user submitted site. Since ShutterStock acquired them, the site seems to be going through some revisions. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that they continue to provide 3D models. Usage rights will vary per-model, so make sure to check before using any downloads.

Our Magic VFX assets are one of the most downloaded, most requested and most seen categories. We always get asked how we made them, and decided to finally show off some of our tricks! Since we were revisiting these effects, we decided to add 60 new Magic Impact and Block VFX assets. 

Take a few minutes and see what goes into making these VFX assets, and how you can make some yourself! Now you can become a wizard just like Harry Potter in no time.

Bass drops are one of the greatest tools in your audio arsenal. The low, core shaking tones are perfect when you need emphasis in your scene. Whether you’re making an epic title intro or pummeling a villain, try a bass drop. You won’t be disappointed.

We’ve added 30 Free Bass Drop Sound Effects.  We have a total of 75 Bass Drops available for our Pro Users!

There are a multitude of techniques you can use to animate a photo in After Effects, but our favorite approach has to be utilizing a depth map.

This hasn’t always been easy. In the past, artists had to manually create a depth map by estimating and painting the greyscale images themselves. With the advances and accessibility of Machine Learning tools, a better approach is now readily available.

Photoshop is leading the charge with their Neural Filters. Here’s how to create a Depth Map in Photoshop.

Select your photo layer, go to Filter > Neural Filters > Depth Blur and toggle it on. Then select Output Depth Map Only and once it is done processing in the cloud, select Duplicate Layer and hit Okay

Now you can easily animate your image using your depth map and the displacement map plugin in After Effects!

These anime fighting VFX are incredibly easy to use! Just drag and drop, and you’re ready to go. We have 10 total assets, all hand drawn and 4K resolution to fit any combat scene.

If you’re looking to stylize them a bit more, adding some chromatic aberration goes a long way! Dropping the opacity and adding a Fast Radial Blur at the point of impact will enhance these even more. These are extremely fun to use, once you get the hang of adding them to your videos, you’ll be able to stylize them in no time!

Fog and atmosphere always look awesome, but rendering them is still a pain. Noise, trouble with lights and lack of control (and of course slow rendering speeds) make us dread rendering fog scenes. Our approach is to add fog in post-production as often as possible using a depth pass.

This trick is cheap and easy! You can customize and make any adjustments without being stuck with rendered fog. Check out our tutorial here

Who isn’t inspired by their childhood? The aesthetics and styles we grew up with influence us daily. I took that inspiration to another level.

Kakashi, a character from the Naruto anime series, was always one of my favorites. His awesome powers were always so iconic, I knew I had to try and recreate them with VFX.

Electricity is always a fun effect to tackle. We’ve done it many times over, but we’ve never captured REAL electricity, at least until now. Using a tesla coil and a Black Magic Ursa, we shot practical electricity. We made a Chidori, or Electric Energy Ball, completely FREE for anyone to download and recreate this effect themselves. No good VFX asset is good enough without the right sound. Niko went ahead and made a specialty Chidori Sound Effect, also completely free, for you to download.

Sprite sheets, sometimes referred to as Texture Atlases, are a useful way to store image sequences or animations in a single file. This is extremely useful for games and some animation. Unity, Blender and some particle systems can properly read these texture atlases. Generating these in After Effects has always been possible, but tedious. We decided it was time to simplify that.

Comedy is hard

It is one of the least forgiving genres. Setting up a joke and missing the mark is painful. The best way to avoid falling flat is to warm your viewers up and make them ready to laugh! Projection mapping to flat, non animated objects is pretty easy. It’s even easier if you use our Projection Mapping Script (also free!) But what do you do if you want to map on to an animated surface? This is something we’ve struggled with in the past. For compositing pre-rendered VFX assets, the ability to do this would be extremely powerful.

Luckily, we have some pretty smart people working here at ProductionCrate. David came up with this clever technique using the Content Aware Fill tool in AE.

To simplify things even further, Nate built us a script! This script will save you time while approaching this technique. I suggest watching David’s video above to have more control over the script’s results. The entire process will take you less than a minute to set up.

We have amazing scripts, many of them completely free, for After Effects. Crate’s Camera Shake, the Hologram Generator, Crate’s Chromatic Aberration and tons of other useful tools are available for download on ProductionCrate.

Accessing these amazing products is now easier than ever before. With our free Crate’s Toolbox, you can download and install our After Effects scripts from inside of After Effects!

Remember, you don’t have to Log-in every time, you just need to log-in to download the scripts. Click the Offline Button if you don’t want to log in but still want to use the AE scripts you have already downloaded.

First, if you have any ProductionCrate Scripts already installed, delete them! This will ensure Toolbox can launch the most recent versions and locate the files without issue.

If you are on a Mac, run the .DMG installer, if you are on Windows, run the .EXE

Restart After Effects if you have it open

To locate the Extension if After Effects, go to Window > Extension > Crate’s Toolbox

You’ll need to select 2 Download folders:

• The first folder is likely your default Downloads folder. This is just where all of your downloaded items go to when you download from Chrome, Firefox, Safari or any web browser.
• The second folder is for storing your Crate Scripts. This can be anywhere on your computer. Don’t delete it, this will be where all the script files will be referenced! You can create a new folder and call it anything, ProductionCrate Scripts, for example.

You will only have to do that step once!

After that, log in to ProductionCrate using Toolbox and download any Scripts and tools you want to use. Hitting Install will launch your browser to install the script, make sure it downloads to your Downloads Folder, or whatever folder you chose as your first folder (see above)

The scripts will be automatically copied over to your store folder, the second folder mentioned above!
