Meteor VFX Breakdown – Quick Tutorial

No disaster movie is complete without an apocalyptic meteor effect. This Davesplanation breaks down the steps we went through to create our very own asteroid impact using VFX!

This was built using a variety of software and ProductionCrate assets, including:

3D Photoscanned Meteor Model – A high-quality photorealistic asteroid that had been digitally scanned from the real world. You can learn more about these assets in this excellent breakdown video.

Dust and Smoke VFX assets – These were essential in completing the look of the effect, creating a realistic volumetric appearance to the meteor’s impact. Tinting them to match the ground, as well as stacking them several times is all that is required to professionally polish your compositing.

Explosion and Fire Sound Effects – ProductionCrate’s huge selection of sound effects means you will be able to pair the correct audio to your visuals. We layered together several of these to create a dynamic and exciting audio track.

Feel free to check out our 2-minute information-packed video to learn some of the techniques we used.

3D Arrow Pack Now Available

Pro Users can now download these 4 unique 3D Arrow Assets. These 3D Models come fully textured. We made a variety of styles to choose from, varying from the Stone Age to the Future!

Let’s go back in time, starting from the future! We have a Sci-Fi style arrow available for you to download. This model comes with a separate tip, which you can rotate at a different rate to give your arrow animation a more mechanical vibe.

ScifI arrow Model for Download

Modern style arrows look pretty awesome as well! This model is similar to the look of many current hunting arrows, with plastic feathers and an intimidating arrowhead.

The medieval arrow can span many centuries, and is probably the style you think of when you think ‘bow and arrow’. This one has realistic feathers and an iron tip.

And finally, the stone-tipped arrow!  Thread keeps the arrowhead on this ancient looking weapon. This is my personal favorite, so I’ll give it two photos.

We have tons of 3D Weapon assets to choose from, including these Grenade Models!

Download New Cloud VDBs Set

We have 10 Production-Ready Cloud VDB’s ready for you to download.

These video effects were built in Houdini and are compatible with most 3D software. Load these VDB’s quickly into your scene using your renderer or plugin of choice.

This set of 10 includes the most commonly seen cloud shapes. You can mix them together for cloudy days and rotate them for an endless variety of options. These clouds also work wonderfully as storm clouds. Use a light with some randomized position parameters and have your light flash and fade over 15 or so frames. Place your light within your cloud VDB and you have quickly created your own storm-clouds!

We are having a great time building out FootageCrate assets based off of these VDBs. If you have an aerial shot you want to make more interesting by flying through some clouds or a CGI shot that calls for some interesting sky scenes then these FX are right for you.

We also have two other VDB categories already built out. Our Mega Tornado pack will let you create your own doomsday, while our mist pack is perfect for those SciFi and fantasy projects.

Photorealistic 3D Grenade Model – Download

Download the Mk2 Grenade 3D  Model here.

Every action movie needs a grenade, and our asset library is the perfect resource to help you out with it!

Our recent launch of RenderCrate, a collection of production-ready 3D models, now features a wide collection of weapons. One of our favourite additions is the high-quality photorealistic grenade model for our Pro users.

Whether you’re wanting a slow-motion flyby, or just don’t have a grenade prop, a 3D grenade model is perfect for filling in what practical effects cannot.

The model has been built with a careful balance between a high level of detail as well as a clean adjustable mesh. A benefit of this is that you can use this model in simulations while keeping the processing time at the lowest possible. If you want to tweak the model in any way, that will also be a hassle-free task!

3D Grenade Model Download

The model is provided in a .obj format, which is the most widely accepted 3D format. Almost all programs support it, with Blender, Cinema4D, Element3D, 3ds Max and Maya being just a few. In most cases, you will just need to drag and drop the .obj grenade into your program viewport, and the software will handle the rest!

This comes along with a .mtl file, which will automatically create a basic material for the grenade. However, if you look in the maps folder provided with all of our 3D content, you will often find there are even more textures for you to make use of. For this model, we provide:

  • Diffuse
  • Ambient Occlusion
  • Height
  • Reflection
  • Roughness

These are a powerful set of texture maps that can bring your render to a photorealistic level, with each coming at a 4096 x 4096 resolution.

Each segment of the grenade, such as the pin, have also been separated into their own object elements. This means that you will be able to detach them if needed and animate them however you wish.

Creating Earthbender VFX

Recently we’ve had a dig at creating one of our most epic shots in ProductionCrate history – Earthbending!

We utilised the full range of FootageCrate content to help us achieve this destruction VFX. After building out the scene in 3ds Max, smoke bursts, shockwaves and debris elements from FootageCrate (which you can download here) brought the compositing to the next level.

Our powerful Camera Shake Script also gave us control over realistically jolting the camera to fully immerse our viewers into this clip.

The crashing elements from SoundsCrate can also help build the action.

We used 3ds Max and After Effects as our choice of software, though anyone wishing to follow along will be able to use almost any program that has the same features!

Head over to our recent Davesplanation video to check out how we did it!

We hope projects like these inspire you to create your next epic project using ProductionCrate assets.
